Chateau Ste. Michelle
July 29th, 2011

Review by Art Rusche

As annual Styx concert goers, my sis Peggy & I attended this years concert on a warm summer evening at the Chateau Ste.Michelle.  With seventh row tickets, we took every opportunity to get in front of the stage!!
After a warmup act, Styx took the stage and during the last few songs Peg and I got in front of the stage. Tommy came down in front of us and allow the girls next to us to play his guitar! The very familiar act sounded as good as it always does with Lawrence on the keys and vocals has become fully integrated in Styx and is sounding very fine! Ricky's great bass with JY's and Tommy's guitar and vocals make Styx a very tight band that enjoys performing and interacting with the crowd. AND w
e were very Front Stage Baby and it sounded and felt so good !!!

yes took the stage next and Peg and I stormed the stage as soon as we could! The ushers told us when "Starship Trooper" starts you can get up to the stage...... but at "And You and I" we were able to camp out in front of the stage for the rest of the night!

In 2008 original lead signer Jon Anderson left the group diagnosed with acute respiratory failure.  He wanted to take temporary break but the band did a search on the internet for yes cover bands and found Benoît David previously of a yes tribute band called "Close to the Edge".  Benoît sounded marvelous!! Jon still may return in the future...

Steve Howe was 64 and was voted "Best Overall Guitarist" for 5 years in a row from 1977-1981. He picked his classic "Roundabout" guitar licks right in front of me that brought back years of memories!

At 63, English musician Chris Squire, an original band member still plays his bass with pure passion!!  He entertained us all covering the whole stage during his performance.!

Drummer Alan White was 62 and
resides in Newcastle, Washington!
He also played with
John Lennon and The Plastic Ono Band from 1969-1971

Geoff Downes, 59 takes over keyboard duties from the original
Rick Wakeman and son Oliver Wakeman.

Both band's performances, outside on a warm summer eve with a bottle of Ste. Michelle Chardonnay, sounded great!!!  And of course being absolutely Front Stage Baby is always an awesome experience!
